Historic Maps Allow Us to See the World Through our Ancestors? Eyes

Humans have been trying to map the world since the beginning of our existence.  Ancients all around the world have tried mapping out the area(s) surrounding them.  Even though we’re living in a time where the entire world is mapped out and recreated as a globe, it’s still interesting to look at the world as our ancestors saw it.

No matter where your ancestors are from, looking at historic maps is a great way to see the world through their eyes.  There are antique world maps that are centuries old.  European maps, Asian maps, Australian maps, North and South American maps, and African maps can date back hundreds of years.  There are even historical maps dating back thousands of years to ancient empires!  Whenever ancient emperors successfully conquered another part of the world, the maps would be updated.  Studying the ancient Roman Empire maps, for instance, can be very intriguing.

These maps have either been handed down over the centuries, or discovered through archaeological searches.  There are companies that specialize in recreating ancient maps, straight down to the last detail.  Have you ever wondered what America looked like during the Civil War?  What did Europe look like under Roman rule?  What names did your ancestors give to their lands?  Would you like to see how the United States evolved through historical maps?  How have the sea levels changed over the last several centuries?  What if you found out that your ancestors had their own personal maps of the land(s) they owned?

Thanks to the Internet, it’s possible to browse through historic maps.  You can even order replicas of antique world maps as well as genealogy maps.  Whether you’re a history buff, a genealogy buff, or simply curious, looking at ancient maps can be a very interesting experience.

Google Maps, Msn Virtual Earth and Yahoo! Maps on the Same Page

Why it’s good to have all three map services in one place? Simply because there are geographical regions on Earth where the three services are complementary. These complementarities come from many points. The first one is geographically. There are regions where MSN Virtual Earth has good road maps  but Google Maps has more accurate image data and with a higher resolution. And also is about the up-dated maps and images.  Once they have not the same sources of  data (Image courteasy of NASA for MSN Virtual Earth , Data Navteq, Teleatlas for Yahoo! Maps and Google Maps) the images have different resolutions and collection date. In some regions Yahoo! Maps has good city maps with clear specification of one way roads and street names. These regions are in Asia, Africa, South America but also in Europe (Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine) where the need of all these three maps services together is obviously big. For example in Romania Google Maps shows on the map only the main important cities and some localities situated on the main national routes and  MSN Virtual Earth shows on the map all main cities and a lot of small villages. But the area covered with high resolution images by Google Maps is significant bigger than the area covered with high resolution images by MSN Virtual Earth and Yahoo! Maps. But Yahoo! Maps has better city road maps for the main cities from Romania : Bucharest and Timisoara. In Argentina MSN Virtual Earth comes with geocoding places and addresses, road maps, satellite imagery and photography and traffic incident and flow information (but you have to be careful – data across the country seems very inconsistent : there are floating parallel roads that lead nowhere and locals notice there are incorrect road names). Google Maps and and Yahoo! Maps have not good road maps, and traffic incident and flow information but they have in some regions of Argentina better satellite imagery and photography.
The second complementarity comes from the additional tools they have and how they implemented them. Getting directions, finding addresses, overall speed of loading programs, overall intuitiveness are some of the features where these three programs are complementary. And in the latest service of these software “Reverse Geocoding” service ( which is finding an associated textual location such as a street address, from geographic coordinates ) there are also important differences. In some regions  you can get only the county names for Google Maps and full address at a level of street name and number for MSN Virtual Earth and in other regions you can get nothing from MSN Virtual Earth but something from Google Maps. Also there are differences in the accuracy of data. When you have all these three services together you can have the opportunity to compare them to see what and where you may find better information.
A sample of the implementation of all these three services in one page exists at  www.satelitimobiliare.ro   which is a real estate site. Maybe you may find it interesting.
All together are quite useful BUT when you have a good internet connection (if you are lost, didn’t get a map of where you were going ahead of time, and don’t have an internet connection then all of these services are useless)

Genealogy Maps Offer Us Excitement

Antique world map collectors are a group of people that have an interest in seeing the world as it has changed over ages.  Antique collectors are not only interested in watching history evolve through maps, but the quality of map making, as well.  Many map collectors also have an interest in historic military and cartography.

Maps have been used to help with the discovery and colonization of the world.  Antique world maps were often beautifully painted and made.  Historical map artists were very talented at drawing and painting landscapes with perfect detail.  Historic maps have evolved from the days of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, to Native American tribe territory drawings, and to the European drawings of their naval discoveries.

Since then, historic maps have been drawing detailing the colonization of the United States of America.  Not only did the Native Americans draw maps of their tribes throughout the ages, but immigrants have been drawing detailed maps of boundaries and territories from the time they begin coming over here, throughout the Revolutionary, Mexican, and Civil Wars, to where we are today.

Because of these maps, many of us today are able to study the world as it was for our ancestors.  There are some who now collect historic maps to help them with genealogy projects.  Historic maps used along with old census records makes it easy to track our ancestors’ moments over the years.  No matter what continent our ancestors originated from, genealogy maps gives us the ability to trace their footsteps all across the globe!  Those of us with Native American ancestry can follow them as they moved all around North and South America over the centuries.

The market for antique world maps is increasing with new buyers every year.  The excitement that historical and genealogy maps give us, for whatever reason(s), is spreading to others.  Historic maps truly give us an insight to not only our own family heritage, but the entire world’s.

How to Design a Map Quiz That Even a Cartographer Would Love

Q. How can I design an interesting map quiz?

A. You can’t. At least you can’t if you intend to design a map quiz where you draw some geographical areas and then ask “Where is South America?”. While that would definitely qualify as a map quiz, it wouldn’t make the grade of an “interesting” map quiz.

There is a thin line between geography quiz and map quiz. Once you cross that line, and get away from the simple geography, you can make a map quiz downright interesting.

For example, you might design a map quiz that asks questions about how maps are actually made. A lot of people don’t realize the magic that is needed to represent a round world on a flat piece of paper. Questions along this line could be very enlightening.

Another great set of map quiz questions could deal with how to navigate a ship using charts and a pair of dividers. You could ask them to determine how many nautical miles it is between two points.

Maybe you’d like to combine a map quiz with a scavenger or treasure hunt. Bury something valuable somewhere and then create treasure maps. The map quiz could ask questions that can only be answered by reading the map. As each question gets answered the person gets closer to finding the prize.

Another great idea would be to present a complex problem that has to be solved by being able to read and understand a map thoroughly. Here’s an example:

You have 10 days vacation and decide to take a car trip around the United States.

You can drive no more than 10 hours per day and you can drive no faster than 55 miles per hour.

Your trip must start and end in the same State. Other than that, you may not visit any state more than once.

You must exit a state at the opposite border that you entered it from. For example, if you entered a state from the North, you must exit from the South. if you entered from the Northeast, you must exit from the Southwest.

At the end of each 10 hour period you must spend the night (14 hours) in a town or city whose name contains the letter “e”.

Using the map, mark your daily route, including the number of miles driven, and circle the name of the town or city that you spent the night in. Be sure to write the day # as well.

The person who visits the most states in the 10 day period wins.

That ought to be a map quiz that will be remembered for some time to come.

Remember, a map quiz doesn’t have to be dull and boring; use your imagination to develop a map quiz that challenges and stimulates.
